abhilashr:
It is trite to see Indian teenagers not opt for anything but an engineering/doctor degree. No big news. Very very few actually know of more options barring the options of an engineer or doctor or in best cases, a lawyer.
Everybody talks about 16 year olds looking beyond the known options. Like this guy here. I am guilty of the act, too. I have spoken to kids at my alma mater and exhorted them to explore more options. I have lauded the one girl in the whole class who said I want to be a lawyer, when the whole class of 80 said engineer/doctor. I keep telling my brother to explore more options, now that he is a 14-year old.
But how much can a middle-class town-bred kid actually explore? Can we expect every kid of that age to think beyond the usual?
Come to think of it, most of our generations have grown up as engineers (in top colleges) and then discovered their real strengths and become painters, filmmakers, artists, writers and economists. The root cause being that their engineering degree (at an IIT/BITS/the likes) widened their horizons, gave them that exposure that their middle-class family and small town did not. If that is the case, why do we cry now? Let our kids be engineers and one fine day, they will find their home.
Amen to that.
